Lorem Ipsum: what it is and when to use it
You've seen it a thousand times in mockups and wireframes. But where does this nonsense text come from? And more importantly: when does it hurt instead of help?
Lorem ipsum isn't "random text" or "fake Latin". It's real text, mangled, from the Roman philosopher Cicero — written in 45 BC in his book "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil). An unknown 16th-century typesetter took a passage from book 1, scrambled the words, and the filler we use today was born.
Why this specific text?
In the 1500s, a typesetter needed to demonstrate a font without distracting the reader with content. Period-appropriate English or Italian pulled focus to meaning. Mangled ancient Latin LOOKS like real text (varied word lengths, punctuation, paragraphs) without anyone actually reading it. Problem solved. It stuck.
The famous opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" comes from "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" (there is no one who loves pain itself). The mangled version drops "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem" and starts mid-word at "ipsum" — turning "dolorem" into "lorem" by the cut.
When to use Lorem Ipsum
- Early wireframes and mockups — when final content doesn't exist yet and you want focus on layout.
- Font demonstrations in typographic catalogs.
- PowerPoint, Keynote, Figma templates where the user will swap for real content.
- Line-break tests in cards and buttons — Lorem gives varied word lengths.
When NOT to use it
Final client presentations. A non-designer client sees Lorem and thinks "something's missing". Worse: some think it's real copy and ask for revisions. Use English placeholders ("Section title", "Feature description goes here") or realistic project content.
Functional UX/UI demos. Lorem masks real reading issues: confusing hierarchy, paragraphs that are too long, CTAs that get lost. In usability testing, use realistic copy from the product's domain.
Best practices with Lorem
- Vary length. Use both short AND long paragraphs — real layouts have this variance.
- Don't copy the same Lorem block 5x on a page. Generate fresh for each block.
- Include lists and headings in your Lorem. Paragraph-only layouts don't test hierarchy.
- Replace before showing to anyone outside the design team.
